OpenVPN Connect is the “official” app from the OpenVPN Inc. and is intended to be more user-friendly for VPN users with limited technical expertise. It’s also less feature-rich than the openvpn android app that is targeted at more advanced OpenVPN users.
Openvpn for Android Openvpn for Android, a free and open-source application developed by Arne Schwarzbe, enables you to connect with any VPN service that supports OpenVPN protocol. If your device isn’t compatible with the pre-configured VPN apps that are available in Google Play Store, this is an excellent alternative. The process is relatively simple. You will need to import the VPN profile files. (The configuration files are named.ovpn). They can be downloaded from the provider’s website or via live chat support.
After you’ve transferred your profile to the app, tap on the server to connect. Once connected, your Internet traffic is directed through a secure tunnel to the server you’ve selected in the application. The Status tab lets you check your connection’s details and the status. The kill switch is turned on by default. It will shut off your internet connection when the VPN tunnel is lost.
The app also provides per-app VPN as well as an all-day-long feature that automatically begins an VPN connection whenever it is opened and continues to operate even after your device goes to sleep or switches networks. This feature, however, requires Android 7.0 or higher and could drain your battery more than normal.
