Avast Ultimate is a security software with an impressive detection rate and many extra features. Its malware scanner received 100% in my tests and its web protection blocked a variety of phishing websites that managed to get past Chrome and Firefox’s default protections. Other features include the Rescue Disk, a secure browser for online shopping and banking, as well as advanced tracker blocking and an VPN.
The interface for users of the suite is simple. The main screen shows an array of icons that clearly describe the functions of each tool. Avast utilizes an orange, white and blue color scheme that’s pleasing to the eye and easy to read.
In the Explore menu, you can access more in-depth options for each tool, including custom scans, boot-time scanning, and an automatic updater. You can also save a specific kind of scan in the “Scan Center” so that you can run it at a later time.
Advanced features of Avast can help protect against ransomware by watching your computer for suspicious activities, and encrypting files that may be targeted. It can identify trojan horses (malicious software that disguises itself as legitimate software and enter your computer) and block them from running.
Avast’s security offerings are backed by 24/7 live chat, email and telephone support. The free versions of Avast are supported by a vast knowledge base and community. Paid plans include advanced features, such as identity protection, USB protection, patch management, and unlimited VPN.
